The Peterborough market
Peterborough's district had about 215,700 residents at the 2021 Census, against about 183,600 in 2011. The urban area includes long-established districts such as Werrington, Bretton, Stanground, Millfield, Paston and Fletton, alongside the planned townships of Orton and, to the south, the large Hampton development. Each one has its own centre and search patterns.
The city has a strong engineering heritage. Perkins Engines, founded here in 1932, once employed more than a tenth of the population, and Baker Perkins and Peter Brotherhood are other long-standing engineering names. British Sugar has its head office in the city. In the 1990s the city attracted financial and service businesses including Thomas Cook and Pearl Assurance. Its location at junction 17 of the A1(M), on the East Coast Main Line, has made it a major logistics and distribution hub.
For most of its history Peterborough had no university campus of its own. That changed when ARU Peterborough opened on Bishops Road in September 2022, bringing students into the city centre.
Peterborough Cathedral, founded as a monastery in AD 655, is one of England's great Norman buildings and the burial place of Catherine of Aragon. The Queensgate centre anchors the city's shopping.
In search, competition in Peterborough differs from sector to sector, and district names are usually less contested than city-wide terms. There's also a naming quirk: Peterborough in Ontario, Canada shares the name, so broad searches can bring up Canadian pages.
How Peterborough customers search
- Estate searches. Residents of Hampton and other large estates search for everything from dentists and nurseries to builders and takeaways. Businesses that show up early win long-term customers.
- Township and district searches. "Plumber Orton", "café Werrington" and "garage Bretton" reward strong local profiles and reviews.
- Logistics and B2B. Distribution centres along the A1(M) buy staffing, maintenance, fleet, security and packaging services.
- Engineering supply chain. Suppliers to Perkins and other manufacturers target specialist technical searches.
- Commuter and student demand. Commuters search for local services outside working hours, and the ARU campus brings student demand to the centre.
