The Lincoln market

At the 2021 Census, Lincoln's district had about 104,000 residents, and its urban area, which takes in North Hykeham and nearby villages, about 128,000. With few large towns nearby, Lincoln acts as the main shopping, service and employment centre for a large part of Lincolnshire. People travel in from across the county for specialist services.

The city's heritage draws visitors from around the world. Lincoln Cathedral's central spire, completed in the 14th century, is widely believed to have made it the tallest man-made structure in the world for more than 200 years. Lincoln Castle, built on William I's orders in 1068, holds one of only four surviving original copies of the 1215 Magna Carta. The uphill Bailgate and Steep Hill area is lined with independent shops, cafés and pubs. The Brayford Waterfront below is busy with students, restaurants and bars. The city's famous Christmas Market ran from 1982 to 2022 and drew around a quarter of a million visitors at its height.

The University of Lincoln had about 18,700 students in 2021–22, and Lincoln Bishop University, which gained university status in 2012 as Bishop Grosseteste, adds more. Siemens has made and serviced industrial gas turbines in Lincoln for decades, carrying on the engineering heritage of Ruston & Hornsby. Lincolnshire County Council and the NHS are also major employers. Lincoln has no motorway, but the A46 and the A15 eastern bypass, completed in 2020, connect it to the region.

How Lincoln customers search

  • Uphill visitor searches. "Afternoon tea Bailgate", "pubs near Lincoln Cathedral" and "gift shops Steep Hill" are made by visitors on foot, deciding in minutes.
  • Brayford and city-centre searches. Students and locals search for food, bars and services around the waterfront and the High Street.
  • County-wide service searches. People from across Lincolnshire search for Lincoln specialists: solicitors, consultants, clinics, trades and retailers.
  • Suburb and village searches. "Electrician North Hykeham", "dentist Birchwood" and "café Nettleham" reward businesses with strong local profiles.
  • Engineering and defence B2B. Suppliers to Siemens Energy and the nearby RAF stations need visibility for specialist searches.
