We run campaigns for East Anglian businesses from our Sheffield office, entirely online.

The Norwich market

The city itself had around 147,000 residents in a 2024 estimate, while the urban area counted about 213,000 at the 2011 Census, and the travel-to-work area is bigger again. Suburbs such as Hellesdon, Sprowston, Costessey, Taverham and Thorpe St Andrew sit outside the city boundary, and many residents there search with their own suburb names.

The city's economy has deep roots in insurance. Norwich Union, founded in 1797, grew into one of the country's largest insurers before becoming part of Aviva, which has kept a large office presence in the city. The University of East Anglia, founded in 1963, brings thousands of students to Norwich, many from overseas. The Norwich Research Park, home to the John Innes Centre, gives the city a strong life sciences sector.

Retail and culture are central to city life. Norwich has often featured in top-ten rankings of UK shopping destinations. Its market is described as the largest permanent undercover market in Europe, and Chantry Place (called Chapelfield until 2020) and the Castle Quarter add major centres. The Norwich Lanes are packed with independent shops and cafés. In 2012 Norwich became England's first UNESCO City of Literature. It's also a gateway to the Norfolk Broads, which brings visitors through the city.

In search, the towns called Norwich in Connecticut and Vermont can creep into broad queries. Difficulty varies a lot by sector, and neighbourhood, independent and B2B searches are usually where local businesses find room to win.

How Norwich customers search

  • Independent retail and food. "Vintage shop Norwich Lanes", "brunch Golden Triangle" and "bookshop Norwich" are won by businesses with strong profiles and plenty of recent reviews.
  • County-wide visitors. Shoppers from across Norfolk search for specific products, services and places to eat before they travel in.
  • Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Eaton", "plumber Thorpe St Andrew" and "café Riverside" reward strong local profiles and reviews.
  • Insurance and life sciences B2B. Suppliers to Aviva and the research park search for specialist services.
  • Student demand. Lettings, food and services near UEA peak at the start of each term.
