The Colchester market
Colchester's built-up area had around 130,000 residents at the 2021 Census, which made it the second largest settlement in Essex. It received city status on 5 September 2022. The town sits about 50 miles north-east of London on the A12 and the Great Eastern Main Line, and less than 30 miles from Stansted Airport.
The city has a distinctive mix of customers. Colchester Garrison, a military base since Roman times, has been home to the Army's 16 Air Assault Brigade since it was formed in 1999, and army families make up a significant part of the local population. The University of Essex, established at Wivenhoe Park in 1961, brings a large student population to the east of the city. Both groups move in and out regularly, which means a constant stream of new people searching for local services.
Heritage is a big draw. Visitors come for Colchester Castle, the Roman walls and the Dutch Quarter, where Jane Taylor wrote "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star". The city's neighbourhoods include Lexden, Mile End, Highwoods, Stanway, Greenstead, Old Heath and Prettygate, and nearby Wivenhoe and Tiptree have strong identities of their own.
In search, Colchester, Vermont shares the name and can creep into broad results. Difficulty varies by trade, and neighbourhood searches, plus the searches people make just after moving here, are often easier to win.
How Colchester customers search
- New-arrival searches. Army families and students arriving in the city search for GPs, dentists, schools, gyms, takeaways and trades. Being visible when they arrive wins long-term customers.
- Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Lexden", "plumber Highwoods", "café Wivenhoe" and "garage Stanway" reward strong local profiles and reviews.
- Heritage visitor searches. Day-trippers search for things to do, places to eat and parking near the castle and the Dutch Quarter.
- Student demand. Lettings, food and services near the University of Essex peak at the start of each term.
- Commuter demand. Residents commuting to London search for local services outside working hours.
