The Milton Keynes market
Milton Keynes was designated as a new town on 23 January 1967 and became a city on 15 August 2022. At the 2021 Census its urban area had about 264,000 residents, above the original 250,000 target. The city incorporated older towns, including Bletchley, Wolverton, Stony Stratford and Newport Pagnell, alongside the planned estates. More than 170 miles of segregated "redway" paths link it all together.
The economy has a strong track record. Between 2014 and 2017, Milton Keynes ranked third for its contribution to the national economy, and it placed sixth nationally for business start-ups per 10,000 people in 2020. Services provide the great majority of jobs, alongside a smaller manufacturing base. Organisations with large MK bases have included Red Bull Racing, Network Rail, Santander UK, the Open University, Mercedes-Benz and the Volkswagen Group. By 2020 the city was home to the world's largest fleet of autonomous delivery robots.
It's very well connected. M1 junctions 13 and 14 serve the city, Milton Keynes Central sits on the West Coast Main Line with fast trains to London Euston, and several other stations serve the urban area. Bletchley Park, the Second World War code-breaking centre, is one of its best-known attractions.
In search, broad Milton Keynes terms attract a lot of competition, partly because so many businesses are based here. Estate-level and specialist B2B searches are often where local businesses can win.
How Milton Keynes customers search
- Estate-level searches. "Dentist Westcroft", "café Stony Stratford", "electrician Kingston" and "nursery Newport Pagnell" reward businesses with strong local profiles and reviews from nearby customers.
- Central MK retail and leisure. Shoppers and visitors in the city centre search for food, drink, services and things to do.
- B2B and HQ services. With so many headquarters and start-ups, there's strong demand for IT, recruitment, accountancy, legal, office and facilities services.
- Motorsport and engineering. Suppliers to Red Bull Racing and the wider automotive and engineering cluster target highly specialist searches.
- Commuter demand. Residents who commute to London often search for local services in the evenings and at weekends.
How we help Milton Keynes businesses rank
