From our Sheffield office we run SEO for clients up and down the country, including on the South Coast.

The Southampton market

Southampton had around 249,000 residents at the 2021 Census, making it one of the most populous cities in southern England. Neighbouring Eastleigh and Hedge End are separate towns with their own search patterns, and many customers there search with their own town name.

The port is central to the economy. The Port of Southampton, inaugurated in 1843, has long been a home port for luxury cruise ships as well as a major freight and container port. Carnival UK, the cruise operator, moved into its purpose-built Carnival House head office in the city at the end of 2008. That creates heavy demand for hotels, parking, transfers, provisioning and marine services.

Southampton is also home to Ordnance Survey's headquarters, opened on the edge of the city in 2011. The University of Southampton and Solent University together bring tens of thousands of students to the city, which shapes demand across Portswood, Highfield and the city centre. University Hospital Southampton is a major employer. Westquay, opened in 2000, is the city's main shopping centre. The M3 and M27 connect the city, and London is about 80 miles away.

In search, the toughest Southampton terms are the broad city-wide ones. Specific cruise-related phrases, district names and specialist B2B searches tend to be easier ground for a local business.

How Southampton customers search

  • Cruise passenger searches. "Cruise parking Southampton", "hotel near Southampton cruise terminal" and "taxi to Ocean Terminal" are high-volume, high-intent searches, often made weeks ahead.
  • Port and marine B2B. Shipping, logistics, marine engineering and provisioning firms target specialist searches linked to the docks.
  • Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Shirley", "café Ocean Village", "plumber Bitterne" and "barber Portswood" reward strong local profiles and reviews.
  • Student demand. Highfield and the Solent campus bring term-time spikes for lettings, takeaways and gyms.
  • Healthcare and public sector B2B. Suppliers to the hospital trust and Ordnance Survey search for specialist services.
