The Reading market

Reading's borough had around 183,000 residents in a 2024 estimate, and the wider built-up area around 204,000 at the 2021 Census. It's one of the largest urban areas in the UK without city status, having applied unsuccessfully in 2000, 2002, 2012 and 2022. Neighbouring Earley, Woodley, Tilehurst, Caversham and Lower Earley are part of the urban area but fall under different councils, and many residents search with their own area's name.

Technology and business services have shaped the economy for decades. Thames Valley Park has long hosted large Microsoft and Oracle offices, and Sanofi opened its UK headquarters there in 2019. Bayer moved its life sciences operations to Green Park business park in 2016, and PepsiCo, Cisco and Ericsson are among the other big names that have had offices in the area. The result is a large, varied B2B market for local suppliers.

Transport is a major asset. Reading station was rebuilt in a £850 million project completed in 2015, and it's a western terminus of the Elizabeth line, with stopping services into central London. The M4 serves the town at junctions 10 to 12, and Heathrow is close by.

Every August, the Reading Festival, held since 1971, brings tens of thousands of visitors. The University of Reading, established in 1892, adds a large student population, and The Oracle shopping and leisure centre opened beside the River Kennet in 1999.

In search, Reading's broad terms can be tough to win, particularly in B2B and professional sectors, and the word's everyday meaning adds noise. Neighbourhood, specialist and B2B searches are often where local businesses can win.

How Reading customers search

  • Tech and business services B2B. Firms at Green Park, Thames Valley Park and in the town centre search for IT, recruitment, legal, accountancy, office fit-out and facilities services.
  • Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Caversham", "plumber Tilehurst", "café Earley" and "barber Woodley" reward strong local profiles and reviews.
  • Festival demand. In late August, festival-goers search for food, camping supplies, taxis, accommodation and parking.
  • Commuter demand. Many residents work in London and search for local services in the evenings and at weekends.
  • Student demand. Whiteknights campus brings a September rush for lettings, food and services.
