We're a Sheffield SEO agency, and our Kent clients work with us online.

The Canterbury market

The wider Canterbury district had about 151,000 residents at the 2011 Census. It includes the coastal towns of Whitstable and Herne Bay, about six miles to the north. Each has its own character and search patterns, and many customers search with their own town's name.

Students are central to the economy. The University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University and the University for the Creative Arts all have campuses in the city, and their students make up an unusually large share of the people living here. In 2014/15 the universities were estimated to be worth more than £900 million to the city's economy. Demand for housing, food, nightlife and services rises and falls with the academic year.

Tourism is the other pillar. Canterbury Cathedral, St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pilgrims and tourists have come to the cathedral for centuries, and tourism was valued at more than £450 million in 2015. Whitefriars, redeveloped between 1999 and 2005, is the heart of city-centre shopping. Between them, education and tourism underpin much of the district's economy.

In search, how crowded a term is depends heavily on your sector. Neighbourhood, student and coastal searches often give smaller local businesses room to rank.

How Canterbury customers search

  • Student-driven searches. Lettings, takeaways, bars, gyms and services near the campuses peak at the start of each term, with quieter periods in summer.
  • Visitor searches. "Restaurants near Canterbury Cathedral", "afternoon tea Canterbury" and "things to do in Canterbury" are made by day-trippers and overnight visitors.
  • Coastal town searches. "Seafood Whitstable", "café Herne Bay" and "holiday cottage Whitstable" are separate markets from the city.
  • Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Wincheap", "plumber Sturry" and "garage Hales Place" reward strong local profiles and reviews.
  • Heritage and specialist trades. Historic buildings create demand for conservation builders, architects and specialist craftsmen.

How we help Canterbury businesses rank

Plan around the academic year. For student-facing businesses, we prepare profile updates and content ahead of September and other peaks, and focus on local customers through the quieter months.

Win visitor searches. For hospitality, attractions and retail near the cathedral, we optimise for the searches visitors make before and during their trip.

Cover the coast properly. If you serve Whitstable and Herne Bay, we create useful content for each town rather than duplicated pages.

Map-pack visibility in the city. Optimised profile, consistent listings and a good flow of genuine reviews.

Technical health. Quick-loading pages that work well for visitors on their phones near the cathedral.

Monthly reports. Each month you'll get a short update on rankings and enquiries, plus next steps.

Each of these is explained further on our SEO services and local SEO pages, if you want the background.
