The Brighton market

Brighton and Hove had around 284,000 residents in a 2024 estimate and became a city in 2000. It welcomed around 11.4 million visitors in 2024, and tourism has long been central to the local economy. The Palace Pier, opened in 1899, the i360 observation tower, opened in 2016, and the beach draw day-trippers from London and beyond all year.

The economy is creative, digital and service-led. More than 250 new media businesses had been founded here by 2007, and digital and creative firms have been part of the city's identity ever since. American Express built its European headquarters on John Street, which employed around 3,000 people in 2012. The University of Brighton and the University of Sussex together bring tens of thousands of students to the city.

The city is famously independent. The Lanes and North Laine are packed with independent shops, cafés and bars, and Kemptown, Hanover, Seven Dials and Preston Park each have their own character. Hove, technically part of the city, is very much a separate place in many locals' minds and in their searches. Churchill Square is the city's main covered shopping centre. With direct trains to London and Gatwick Airport, many residents commute.

In search, Brighton's digital heritage means many local firms understand SEO well, and US places called Brighton, in Massachusetts and Colorado, add noise to broad queries. Specific, neighbourhood and niche searches are where most local businesses win.

How Brighton customers search

  • Independent retail and food. "Vintage shops North Laine", "vegan brunch Kemptown" and "cocktail bar The Lanes" are won by businesses with strong profiles, fresh photos and lots of recent reviews.
  • Visitor searches. Day-trippers search for things to do, places to eat and parking near the seafront, often on the day.
  • Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Hove", "plumber Preston Park" and "café Seven Dials" reward strong local profiles and reviews.
  • Digital and creative B2B. Agencies, studios and tech firms compete nationally on specialism and portfolio.
  • Student demand. Lettings, food and services near both universities peak at the start of each term.

How we help Brighton businesses compete

Go niche, not broad. In a market this sophisticated, broad terms are expensive to win. We find the specific searches your customers make, by product, occasion, neighbourhood or problem, where you can realistically rank.

Map-pack visibility in your neighbourhood. Your Google Business Profile, directory listings and a steady review routine set up for the part of the city you serve, whether that's The Lanes, Kemptown or Hove.

Content with genuine personality. Brighton customers respond to businesses with character. We help you publish content that sounds like you and answers the questions your customers ask.

Visitor-season planning. For hospitality and retail, we prepare content and profile updates ahead of the busiest summer weekends and events.

Technical health. Fast, mobile-first sites, because many of your customers are searching on the move.

Monthly reports. A monthly summary: rankings, enquiries, bookings and what's next.
