The Swindon market
Swindon's built-up area had around 225,000 residents at the 2021 Census, making it the largest settlement in Wiltshire. It's made up of distinct areas, including Old Town, Rodbourne, Moredon, Covingham, Haydon Wick, Stratton St Margaret and Wichelstowe, with Wroughton, Highworth and Wanborough on the edges. Each has its own search patterns.
The town's story starts with the railway. Brunel established the Great Western Railway works here in 1841–42, and the STEAM museum tells that story on the old works site. The economy has since diversified. Nationwide Building Society has had its head office in Swindon for decades, and Zurich has long run a large office in the town. Polaris House became the shared base of six of the UK's research councils, which joined UK Research and Innovation in 2018. Intel ran its UK headquarters from a purpose-built Swindon site for more than 40 years before putting it up for sale in 2024. Honda's car plant at South Marston closed in 2021, after more than 35 years, and many former suppliers have had to find new customers.
Swindon's Designer Outlet, opened in 1997 in the old railway buildings, was once Europe's largest covered designer outlet. The famous Magic Roundabout, five mini-roundabouts around a central hub, is a local landmark. The town is served by M4 junctions 15 and 16, and in 2019 a GWR train set a record of 44 minutes to London Paddington.
In search, a Swindon firm is often up against businesses from the whole M4 corridor for its broadest terms. Searches tied to a particular district or a niche B2B service are typically where it can get ahead.
How Swindon customers search
- Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Old Town", "plumber Haydon Wick", "café Wroughton" and "garage Stratton" reward strong local profiles and reviews.
- Housing-development searches. Residents who move into Wichelstowe and other estates on the town's edges search for local services, and early visibility wins long-term customers.
- Corporate and research B2B. Suppliers to Nationwide, Zurich, the research councils and other large offices search for IT, recruitment, facilities and professional services.
- Logistics and manufacturing B2B. Distribution centres and manufacturers along the M4 buy staffing, maintenance, fleet and packaging services.
- Retail and leisure. Shoppers at the Designer Outlet and in the town centre search for food and services nearby.
