SERPentity is a Sheffield SEO agency, and we support our Gloucestershire clients over video calls, shared reports and email.
The Cheltenham market
The borough had 118,836 residents at the 2021 Census, the second-largest settlement in Gloucestershire after Gloucester. Its fortunes began in 1716, when mineral springs were found, and grew after George III came to take the waters in 1788. Joseph Pitt's Pump Room, completed in 1830, still stands in Pittville. The town is often called the most complete Regency town in England, and the stucco terraces of Montpellier and the Promenade are part of what draws visitors and shoppers.
Racing is the headline. The Cheltenham Festival dates from 1902, has been held over four days in March since 2005 and builds to the Gold Cup. It is one of the richest meetings in jump racing, and tens of thousands of racegoers come each day. Literature, jazz, science and music festivals, plus the world's oldest cricket festival (first held in 1872), spread visitor demand across the rest of the year.
Then there's the security economy. GCHQ has been in Cheltenham since 1951, and its ring-shaped headquarters is one of the best-known buildings in the county. Close by, Henry Boot Developments started work in July 2026 on Golden Valley, a £1 billion campus for cyber and national-security businesses. Other names with deep Cheltenham roots include Spirax Group (known as Spirax-Sarco Engineering until 2024), UCAS, Kohler Mira, Superdry and Chelsea Building Society. The town is also known for its independent schools, from Cheltenham College (1841) and Cheltenham Ladies' College (1853) to Dean Close and Pate's Grammar.
How Cheltenham customers search
- Race-week and festival demand. "Hotel near Cheltenham racecourse", "taxi Cheltenham races" and "restaurant Montpellier" peak around March and the October Literature Festival. Rankings have to be in place weeks before, not on the day.
- Quarter-by-quarter shopping. People often search for Montpellier, The Suffolks and Regent Street by name for boutiques, salons and cafés, as well as for the town as a whole.
- Cyber and defence B2B. Recruitment firms, consultancies, IT providers and facilities suppliers chasing GCHQ-adjacent contracts compete on credentials and clearances rather than postcodes.
- Family and education services. Families moving for school places look for tutors, estate agents, removals and childcare in Charlton Kings, Leckhampton and Up Hatherley.
- Cheltenham against Gloucester. The two towns are seven miles apart, so for many trades Google's results cover both. Proximity and reviews decide who appears.
