The Exeter market
Exeter had about 131,000 residents at the 2021 Census and an estimated 138,000 by 2024. It grew by 11% between 2011 and 2021. Cranbrook, a town built from scratch just east of the city, welcomed its first residents in 2012 and had 6,743 people at the 2021 Census, a whole new population looking for local services. Topsham, Pinhoe and Alphington each have their own identity and search patterns too.
The workforce is unusually skilled. Around 39% of Exeter workers were in professional occupations in the figures Wikipedia cites, against a national average of 26%. Notable employers include the Met Office, the University of Exeter, Devon County Council, the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and South West Water. The Met Office moved its headquarters to Exeter in 2003, and the Exeter Science Park, opened in 2015, gives science and technology firms a base on the city's eastern edge. The city's economy produced around £5.9 billion of GVA in 2022.
Exeter is the main commercial centre for much of Devon. The cathedral, founded in the mid-11th century, anchors the historic centre. Princesshay, redeveloped between 2005 and 2007, is the main shopping area, and the Quayside attracts visitors and independent businesses. Exeter Airport handled 572,000 passengers in 2025. The M5 ends just south of the city, and the A30 provides a route towards London.
In search, Exeter's broad terms draw interest from across Devon and beyond. Searches built around a district, a newer community or a specific professional service are where a smaller Exeter firm can more easily stand out.
How Exeter customers search
- Professional services. With so many professionals, legal, financial, consultancy and specialist health searches are common and trust-led.
- New-community searches. Residents in Cranbrook and other housing developments search for dentists, nurseries, gyms and trades, and early visibility wins long-term customers.
- Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Heavitree", "café Topsham", "plumber St Thomas" and "barber Pennsylvania" reward strong local profiles and reviews.
- Student demand. Lettings, food and services near the university peak at the start of each term.
- County-wide searches. People from across Devon search for Exeter specialists and retailers before they travel in.
