The Plymouth market

Plymouth had about 264,700 residents at the 2021 Census, making it the largest city in Devon and one of the largest in the South West. It's made up of more than 40 named areas, including Mutley, Mannamead, Plymstock, Plympton, Stoke, Devonport, Stonehouse, Peverell and Hartley. Each one behaves like its own local search market.

The sea dominates the economy. Devonport's dockyard has supported a big defence and engineering supply chain for generations, and hundreds of local firms work in the marine and maritime sector. The Marine Biological Association, founded in 1884, and Plymouth Marine Laboratory, founded in 1988, make the city a world centre for marine science. The University of Plymouth had more than 23,000 students in 2018/19, and Derriford Hospital, north of the centre, is a major employer.

Heritage draws visitors. In 1620 the Pilgrims set sail for the New World from Plymouth, and the Barbican contains around 100 listed buildings. Royal William Yard has become a waterfront destination for food, drink and events. Cross-Channel ferries from the Millbay docks link Plymouth with Brittany and northern Spain, bringing travellers through the city.

In search, Plymouth's name is shared with towns across the United States, so broad queries sometimes mix in American results. Neighbourhood names and marine-sector specialisms give a local business more room to stand out.

How Plymouth customers search

  • Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Mutley", "plumber Plymstock", "café Mannamead" and "barber Plympton" reward strong local profiles and reviews.
  • Waterfront hospitality and visitors. "Restaurants Barbican", "Royal William Yard bars" and "things to do in Plymouth" are made by visitors and locals choosing where to go.
  • Defence and marine B2B. Suppliers to the naval base and marine businesses search for engineering, coatings, survey, safety and logistics services.
  • Ferry traveller searches. Passengers sailing to and from Brittany and Spain search for parking, hotels and food near the terminal.
  • Student demand. Around Mutley and the university, lettings and takeaway searches jump when term starts.
