Understanding Hull's market

Kingston upon Hull had around 267,100 residents at the 2021 Census, and its built-up area runs well past the city boundary. One detail matters a lot for local search. Many places people think of as "Hull", including Hessle, Cottingham and Willerby, are actually in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Customers there may search for "Hull", for their own town or for the East Riding, and your website needs to cover those patterns clearly.

The port is the backbone of the economy, moving millions of tonnes of cargo and supporting thousands of jobs, directly and through its supply chain. Hull has also become a major base for UK offshore wind: in 2021 Siemens Gamesa announced a £186 million expansion of its blade factory at Alexandra Dock, designed to take the workforce there to about 1,200. Reckitt, founded in Hull in 1840, has kept a big presence in the city, and the Saltend Chemicals Park lies just to the east. That creates a large B2B market for engineering, logistics, marine, safety and training services.

Culture and the visitor economy have grown since Hull was UK City of Culture in 2017. The Deep, the aquarium that opened in 2002 where the River Hull meets the Humber, is one of the region's best-known attractions. The Old Town, the Fruit Market and Princes Avenue have become busy food, drink and independent shopping areas. The University of Hull had more than 16,000 students in 2022, and the C4DI digital innovation centre, opened in 2015, gave the local tech scene a home.

There's also a search quirk. "Hull" is a common English word and the name of several US towns, Hull in Massachusetts among them. Clear local signals help Google understand you mean the city on the Humber.

How people in Hull search

  • Neighbourhood food and drink. "Brunch Princes Avenue", "bars Old Town" and "restaurants near me" are decided in the map pack by profile quality, photos and reviews.
  • City versus East Riding searches. Customers in Hessle, Cottingham and Willerby often search their own town name, or the East Riding, rather than "Hull". You need to cover both.
  • Port, energy and marine B2B. Suppliers to the port, offshore wind and the chemical and manufacturing sites target specialist searches with tiny volumes and big contract values.
  • Visitor demand. People visiting The Deep, the museums quarter and events look up parking, food and somewhere to stay, often on the same day.
  • Student-cycle demand. Lettings, takeaways and services near the university peak at predictable times.

Our approach to SEO in Hull

Cover both sides of the boundary. We set up your Google Business Profile, website and directory listings so you're visible to customers in the city and in the East Riding towns you serve, with clear service areas and useful content for each.

Win your neighbourhood. For hospitality and retail in the Old Town, the Fruit Market, Princes Avenue or the Avenues, we focus on the map-pack factors that decide visits: categories, menus, photos, opening hours and review volume.

B2B content for the port and green energy economy. We build pages around your certifications, safety record, capabilities and sectors served, and target the searches procurement teams and engineers use.

Clear signals that you're the Hull in Yorkshire. Full UK contact details, consistent citations, local references and correct structured data help Google keep you out of irrelevant US results.

Speed and technical health. Fast, mobile-friendly pages that Google can crawl and understand easily.

Monthly reporting that makes sense. Rankings, calls and enquiries from Google, plus what we're doing next.

We explain the full method on our SEO services page, and the map-pack side on our local SEO page.
