We're a Sheffield-based SEO agency working with clients across the UK, including Scotland.
The Edinburgh market
Edinburgh had around 531,000 residents in 2024 estimates and is Scotland's second-largest city. Economically it's one of the strongest places in the UK. In 2023 its GDP per head passed London's for the first time, and the city has a highly qualified workforce. The 2020 Global Financial Centres Index ranked it the UK's second-largest financial centre and the fourth-largest in Europe, and financial firms have long occupied a large share of its office space.
Tourism is the other pillar. The city welcomed around 5.3 million visits in 2023, including 2.4 million from overseas. The August festivals have been estimated to draw more than four million attendances and over £400 million in spending, and the 2023 Fringe staged more than 3,700 shows in 300 venues. The Old and New Towns have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. On 24 July 2026, Edinburgh became the first UK city to introduce a visitor levy: 5% on overnight stays, capped at five nights. From that date, the levy has been part of the pricing picture for every hotel, guest house and short-let host in the city.
The city is a patchwork of distinct neighbourhoods: the Old Town and New Town, Leith and the waterfront, Stockbridge, Bruntsfield, Marchmont and Morningside, Haymarket, Gorgie, Newington, Portobello and Corstorphine. Each has its own high street and customers, and in search each behaves like a separate market.
In search, Edinburgh is a capital-city market, so broad terms attract strong competition. How tough it is depends on your sector, and neighbourhood, specialist and visitor-planning searches are where many local businesses can win.
How Edinburgh customers search
- Festival-season visitors. "Restaurants near the Royal Mile", "late bars Old Town" and "Fringe venues near me" are made in huge volumes every August, mostly on phones.
- Year-round tourism. Visitors plan trips weeks ahead with searches like "afternoon tea Edinburgh", "whisky tour" or "things to do in Leith".
- Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Morningside", "café Stockbridge" and "plumber Corstorphine" reward complete profiles and reviews from local customers.
- Professional and financial services. Legal, accountancy, wealth management and fintech searches are competitive and trust-led.
- Student demand. With four universities, lettings, food and services near campuses see predictable peaks.
How we help Edinburgh businesses rank
Plan for August months in advance. We prepare content, profile updates and offers well before the festivals, so you're ranking when visitor searches surge, not scrambling to catch up.
Win more direct bookings. Since the visitor levy started in July 2026, every booking that comes direct rather than through a platform matters. We optimise your profile and pages to compete with aggregators for the specific searches you can win.
Neighbourhood-level visibility. We optimise your Google Business Profile for your exact area, align directory listings and build a steady flow of genuine reviews.
Expertise-led content for professional firms. Detailed, accurate, properly attributed content that shows real experience. Google expects that from legal and financial websites.
Technical health. Fast, mobile-first pages that hold up under festival traffic.
Monthly reports. A clear summary each month of rankings, bookings and enquiries, plus the plan ahead.
The full method is on our SEO services page, and the map work under local SEO.
