Dundee's market
Dundee had around 150,000 residents in 2024 estimates, below its 1971 peak of more than 182,000. Two universities, the University of Dundee and Abertay, bring a student population often put at around 20,000. That shapes demand for housing, food, nightlife and services across the West End, Perth Road and the city centre.
The city's old economy was famously "jute, jam and journalism". DC Thomson, the publisher, has been based in the city since it was founded in 1905. Over the decades since, Dundee has become known for games and design. DMA Design, the studio that created Lemmings and Grand Theft Auto, started here. Rockstar returned in 2020 by acquiring Ruffian Games to form Rockstar Dundee. Studios such as Denki, 4J Studios and Outplay Entertainment have also made their home in the city, and Abertay is renowned for games technology courses.
The waterfront has been reshaped by a £1 billion regeneration masterplan launched in 2001, and V&A Dundee opened there in September 2018 as the first V&A outside London. The Tay Road Bridge connects the city to Fife, and many customers live across the water in Newport-on-Tay and Tayport.
Broughty Ferry, with its seafront and independent high street, has a strong identity of its own and is searched separately by many locals.
In search, Dundee is a mid-sized city market, so the level of competition depends heavily on your trade. Neighbourhood, student and creative-sector searches often give smaller businesses the clearest openings.
How Dundee customers search
- Student-driven searches. Lettings, takeaways, bars, gyms and services near the universities peak in September and around exams and graduation.
- Waterfront and visitor searches. People visiting the V&A and the waterfront search for food, coffee, parking and things to do nearby.
- Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Broughty Ferry", "café Perth Road", "plumber Lochee" and "hairdresser Stobswell" reward strong local profiles and reviews.
- Creative and games B2B. Studios and design businesses compete nationally and internationally on portfolio, specialism and talent.
- Cross-Tay customers. Fife residents across the bridge search for Dundee services and often include their own town names.
