We're a Sheffield-based SEO agency working with businesses across the UK, including Wales.
The Swansea market
Swansea had around 251,000 residents in 2024 estimates, making it the second-largest city in Wales. It became a city in 1969. In the 19th century it was the world's copper-smelting capital, nicknamed "Copperopolis", with more than 600 furnaces by the 1850s. Today's economy is very different.
The DVLA has run its licensing operation from Swansea since 1968, with a purpose-built centre in Morriston opening in 1969, and its headquarters has been a major source of local jobs ever since. Financial services, contact centres and logistics have also brought large employers to the area. Swansea University has a campus in Singleton Park and its Bay Campus, opened in 2015. Together with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, that brings a large student population and strong seasonal demand around Uplands, Brynmill and Sketty.
The coast is a huge draw. The Gower Peninsula was the UK's first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and Mumbles is one of the area's best-known seaside villages. Both bring summer visitors who search for food, accommodation, beaches and activities, often from their phones.
Welsh is part of local life. At the 2021 Census, about 11% of residents, close to 26,000 people, could speak Welsh, and in northern wards such as Mawr and Pontarddulais the share has long been far higher. That makes bilingual content a real option for some businesses.
In search, Swansea's competition depends on what you sell: some trades are crowded, others have few well-optimised rivals. Coastal and hospitality businesses often lean on booking platforms rather than ranking in their own right.
How Swansea customers search
- Coastal visitor searches. "Cafés Mumbles", "surf lessons Gower", "holiday cottages Gower" and "best beach near Swansea" are made in big volumes from late spring to early autumn.
- Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Sketty", "plumber Morriston", "barber Uplands" and "café SA1" reward strong local profiles and reviews.
- Student demand. Lettings, food and services near both university campuses peak at the start of each term.
- B2B for major employers. Suppliers to the DVLA, the universities and the financial services firms search for specialist services.
- Welsh-language searches. Some customers, particularly in the city's more Welsh-speaking areas, search in Welsh.
