We're a Sheffield-based SEO agency working with businesses across the UK, including South Wales.
The Newport market
Newport had around 168,000 residents in 2024 estimates. It became a city in 2002 to mark the late Queen's Golden Jubilee. Between 2011 and 2021 it grew faster than any other local authority in Wales, with new homes, commuters and businesses arriving thanks to its position on the M4 between Cardiff and the Severn crossings.
It's a surprisingly important business location. The Office for National Statistics and the UK Intellectual Property Office both have their headquarters here, and the Passport Office serves the south and west of the UK from the city. Wales & West Utilities and Gocompare have their head offices in the city. Airbus Defence and Space, Safran and KLA have all had operations here, and the Newport Wafer Fab semiconductor plant was bought by Vishay in 2024. That high-tech base is part of the South Wales compound semiconductor cluster known as CSconnected.
Events bring visitors too. The Celtic Manor Resort hosted the 2010 Ryder Cup and the 2014 NATO summit, and the 5,000-capacity ICC Wales, opened in 2019, hosts conferences and exhibitions. The Friars Walk development, opened in 2015 with more than 30 shops, restaurants and a cinema, anchors the city centre. The Newport Transporter Bridge, opened in 1906, is one of the city's best-known landmarks.
In search, Newport has some specific challenges. The name is shared with towns all over the UK and abroad, so results for "Newport" searches can mix places, and businesses from Cardiff and Bristol can appear for local terms as well. Strong local signals and specific searches are how Newport businesses win.
How Newport customers search
- Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Caerleon", "plumber Rogerstone", "café Malpas" and "garage Bettws" reward businesses with strong local profiles and reviews.
- Conference and event searches. Delegates and visitors at ICC Wales and the Celtic Manor search for food, drink, taxis and accommodation, often on the day.
- Commuter searches. Many residents commute to Cardiff or Bristol and search for local services outside working hours.
- B2B and public sector suppliers. Suppliers to the ONS, the IPO and the semiconductor and aerospace firms search for specialist services.
- Heritage and visitor searches. Visitors to Caerleon's Roman remains and the Transporter Bridge search for food and things to do nearby.
