We're a Sheffield-based SEO agency working with businesses across the UK, including Wales.
The Cardiff market
Cardiff had around 384,000 residents in 2024 estimates, which makes it the largest city in Wales. It has been the capital since 1955. It's the country's main centre for finance and business services, which have driven most of the city's economic growth since the 1990s. Admiral was founded in Cardiff in 1993, Principality Building Society has been based here since the 19th century, and many national insurers, banks and utilities have large offices in the city.
Media is the other big story. BBC Cymru Wales and ITV Cymru Wales are based in Cardiff, and S4C, which moved its headquarters to Carmarthen in 2018, keeps an office in the city. Cardiff's independent TV production sector has been estimated at more than 600 companies, and it's produced shows including Doctor Who, Torchwood and Sherlock. Four higher education institutions give the city tens of thousands of students, which shapes demand in Cathays, Roath and the city centre.
Welsh is part of everyday life. At the 2021 Census, 12.2% of residents, almost 43,000 people, could speak Welsh, and the number of Welsh speakers in the city doubled between 1991 and 2021. For some businesses, offering content in Welsh is a genuine way to stand out.
Major events shape demand. The national stadium, opened in 1999 as the Millennium Stadium and renamed the Principality Stadium in 2016, hosts rugby internationals, concerts and big events. St David's shopping centre offers around 1.4 million square feet of retail space. Cardiff Central is the largest railway station in Wales.
In search, Cardiff is the biggest market in Wales, so broad city terms take real effort and the difficulty differs by sector. Neighbourhood, specialist and bilingual searches are often less contested.
How Cardiff customers search
- Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Llandaff", "café Pontcanna", "plumber Whitchurch" and "barber Canton" reward businesses with strong local profiles and reviews.
- Match-day and event searches. Rugby internationals and concerts bring huge crowds searching for food, drink, accommodation and parking around the city centre.
- Student demand. Lettings, takeaways and services in Cathays and Roath peak at the start of each term.
- Professional and financial services. Legal, accountancy, insurance and consultancy searches are competitive and trust-led.
- Welsh-language searches. Some customers search in Welsh for services, education and culture. Few businesses compete there.
