Understanding the Manchester market

The City of Manchester had about 552,000 residents at the 2021 Census, but the real market is Greater Manchester, whose ten boroughs were home to about 2.87 million people at the same census. Much of what people think of as "Manchester" is in separate boroughs. MediaCityUK and Salford Quays are in Salford, the Trafford Centre is in Trafford, and Stockport has its own centre. Google treats these as separate places, and so do many customers when they search.

It's one of the UK's biggest city economies outside London, with a deep office market and a long record of attracting overseas investment. Digital technology is a big employer: a 2021 report found 28% of jobs in the city were in digital tech, and Manchester saw almost 27,000 new tech job openings in 2020, second only to London.

At Salford Quays, MediaCityUK has housed major BBC departments since 2011, and in 2015 Salford City Council put employment at the Quays at around 26,000 jobs across 900 businesses. The universities give Manchester a very large student population. Metrolink carried around 42 million passenger journeys in 2023–24, and Manchester Airport, open since 1938, sits on the city's southern edge.

The search landscape reflects all this. Broad terms in most sectors are fiercely contested by well-resourced firms, and pages about Manchester, New Hampshire can compete for some of the same words. For most local service businesses, though, the opportunity is in specific searches: neighbourhood, specialism and problem-led queries that larger competitors overlook.

Where Manchester businesses can realistically win

  • District-level searches. "Physio Didsbury", "barber Chorlton", "dentist Ancoats" and "café Northern Quarter" are won by businesses with excellent local profiles, not the biggest budgets.
  • Specialist service searches. "Shopify developer Manchester" or "commercial lease solicitor Manchester" have far less competition than broad terms, and the people searching are much closer to buying.
  • Problem-led and question searches. Detailed answers to the questions your customers ask build visibility and trust long before a competitor is considered.
  • Borough-specific searches. Customers in Salford, Trafford or Stockport often search their own borough. Covering those properly opens up markets that city-centre competitors ignore.
  • Ecommerce category and product searches. Manchester has a big ecommerce scene. Category pages, product content and technical SEO decide who wins online sales.

How we help Manchester businesses compete

Find the searches you can win. We map your services against real search demand and measure the competition for each term. You'll know where you can rank within months, rather than chasing terms dominated by national brands.

Hyper-local map visibility. We optimise your Google Business Profile for the district you trade in, align directory listings and build a strong flow of genuine reviews. In dense city areas, small improvements make a big difference.

Content that shows real expertise. Manchester's competitive sectors demand evidence of experience. We help you publish detailed, accurate content written with your people, properly attributed and marked up.

Technical SEO for ambitious sites. For ecommerce and larger service sites, we sort out crawlability, site structure, page speed, faceted navigation and structured data. These are often the hidden reasons a good site underperforms.

Multi-borough coverage. If you serve customers in Salford, Trafford, Stockport or beyond, we structure your site and profiles so each area is covered with useful, unique content.

Reporting tied to revenue. Rankings, calls, enquiries and sales from Google, with a clear plan for the next month.

Our SEO services page has the complete method, and local SEO covers the map-pack side.
