Chester's market
At the 2021 Census, Chester's built-up area had about 93,000 residents and the wider city about 139,000. It has been governed by Cheshire West and Chester Council since 2009. The city sits right on the Welsh border, with Wrexham, Flintshire and Deeside close by. For local search, that means many customers come from a different country, search with different place names and sometimes see slightly different results.
Tourism is central to the economy. Chester has the most complete city walls in Britain, nearly two miles long. The Rows, with shops on two levels, are unique in the country. Chester Racecourse on the Roodee held England's first recorded race meeting in 1540, and race meetings there draw big crowds through the season. Chester Zoo, one of the biggest zoos in the UK, welcomed about 1.95 million visitors in 2024, which made it England's most visited paid attraction outside London that year. The £37 million Storyhouse arts centre, opened in 2017, anchors the city's cultural life.
Financial services have been a major employer for decades, with Bank of America, M&S Bank and NFU Mutual among the firms that built large operations in and around the city. Just over the border, Airbus's Broughton factory has long been the company's centre for commercial aircraft wing production, supporting a large engineering supply chain. The University of Chester, a university since 2005, adds students and staff.
In search, Chester faces two quirks. Towns called Chester in New Hampshire, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Missouri share the name, so broad searches can pull in American pages. Hospitality and accommodation searches also attract the big booking and review platforms. Even so, local independents with strong profiles can win plenty of specific searches.
How people search in Chester
- Visitor planning. "Afternoon tea Chester", "things to do Chester" and "hotels near Chester Racecourse" get researched before and during a visit. The winners combine useful content with a strong map listing.
- Race-day and zoo traffic. Race meetings and peak zoo days create predictable spikes in searches for food, drink, taxis and accommodation.
- Cross-border customers. People in Wrexham, Flintshire and Deeside search for Chester services, often for professional, medical and specialist retail needs.
- Neighbourhood services. "Dentist Hoole", "plumber Upton" and "café Handbridge" reward businesses with complete profiles and local reviews.
- B2B and financial services. Suppliers to the banks, Airbus and the engineering supply chain need visibility for specialist, high-value searches.
