We're an SEO agency based in Sheffield, working with businesses across the North and Midlands.
Understanding Birmingham's market
Beyond the city boundary, the wider urban area takes in about 2.7 million people and the metropolitan area around 4.3 million. The metropolitan economy is one of the biggest in the UK, and services provide the great majority of jobs. It's also a young city, often described as one of the youngest in Europe. With five universities, it's one of the country's biggest centres of higher education outside London.
Professional and financial services are a major part of the economy. In December 2025 Goldman Sachs announced plans for 500 more jobs at its office on the Paradise estate. Regional promoters have long pitched the West Midlands as the UK's largest regional business and professional services cluster. The Colmore Business District is home to many of the city's banks, law firms and consultancies.
The city's districts each have a strong identity. The Jewellery Quarter has been the centre of Birmingham's jewellery trade since the 18th century and is packed with independent jewellers and workshops. Digbeth is the creative and nightlife quarter. Edgbaston, Moseley, Harborne and Kings Heath are affluent residential areas with busy high streets. Sutton Coldfield, inside the city boundary, behaves almost like a separate town. Solihull, next door, is a separate borough with its own search patterns. In 2022 the city hosted the Commonwealth Games, which put its venues and neighbourhoods in front of a global audience.
In search, broad "Birmingham" terms attract heavy competition from local and national firms, and the name is shared with Birmingham, Alabama, so generic searches can surface American pages. The opportunity for most businesses lies in specific, local and specialist searches.
Where Birmingham businesses can win in search
- District searches. "Restaurant Digbeth", "engagement rings Jewellery Quarter", "dentist Harborne" and "gym Sutton Coldfield" are won by businesses with excellent local profiles, not the biggest budgets.
- Specialist professional services. "Employment solicitor Birmingham" or "R&D tax advisor Birmingham" are less competitive than broad terms and much closer to a buying decision.
- Student and young-professional demand. Lettings, food, fitness and nightlife around Selly Oak, the city centre and Digbeth see predictable peaks.
- Independent makers and retail. Jewellers, designers and makers in the Jewellery Quarter and Digbeth compete for both local and national online sales.
- B2B for the professional services cluster. IT, recruitment, office fit-out and compliance providers sell into the Colmore Business District's firms.
